The Goals of the Foundation

Global Reconstructive Surgery Outreach

To financially support surgeons,doctors and nurses and enable them to do voluntary aid work  serving the physically and spiritually poor with critically needed plastic and reconstructive surgeries and professional training of doctors and nurses in the following areas:

1.Mercy Ships International on the  M/V Africa Mercy  - a hospital ship, offering free surgeries to the peoples of Africa.(www.mercyships.org)

2.PAACS, the Pan Africa Academy for Christians Surgeons, training surgeons in Africa. Active in countries like Gabon, Niger, Kenya, Cameroon and Ethiopia training African doctors through a 5 year program credentialed by the Loma Linda University in the USA (www.paacs.net)

3.Operation Smile -  repairing cleft lip and palates in patients of all ages - a global charity  that operates in all countries where the poor cannot afford surgery eg. South America, Central America, Africa, China and India. (www.operationsmile.com )

4.Mercy Vision. A project of Mercy Ships Southern Africa restoring sight to the blind at Zithulele Hospital, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

6.To provide a service to  surgeons working elsewhere in Africa through email correspondence, often with pictures attached on advice on the management of specific problems. With PAACS we have just completed a plastic surgery textbook for surgeons working in developing countries who often encounter plastic surgery related problems. This book is available on the internet at no cost.

Policy Plan







For the year 2014 we aim to raise a minimum of 

 10 000 to support Dr Tertius Venter, plastic surgeon , who volunteers fulltime with no income of his own except donations and to expand the financial help to others

surgeons and nurses as the finances  allow.


 









Remuneration

The management  of the foundation  are not paid for their services and  serve the foundation as volunteers

Activities July to March 2014

1.23 June to 6 July 2013 Butaro Rwanda working with Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org) training doctors at the local hospital in basic surgical technique Reconstructive operations done 29

2.7 July to 20 July Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia working with Operation Smile training surgical trainees (general surgery and maxillofacial -) at the university hospital in basic plastic and reconstructive surgical technique. Formal lectures to trainees on skin grafts and wound cover. Reconstructive operations done 28

3.21 July to 2 August Soddo Christian Hospital, Soddo, Ethiopia, working with PAACS (www.paacs.net) training surgical trainees (general surgery) basic plastic and reconstructive surgical technique. Formal lectures to trainees on hand surgery, burn surgery, wound cover, facial fractures. Ward rounds and operating room on-hands-teaching Reconstructive operations done 10

Training of international surgeons in the management of conditions unique to the developing world. Reconstructive operations done 131

5.28 October to 19 November Soddo Christian Hospital Soddo, Ethiopia, working with PAACS training surgical trainees (general surgery) basic plastic and reconstructive surgical technique. Formal lectures to trainees on hand surgery, burn surgery, wound cover. Ward rounds and operating room on-hands-teaching Reconstructive operations done. 9

6.9 November to 10 November Speaker at the International Conference on Comprehensive Cleft Care Guwahati, Assam, India on Cleft Lip and Palate Repair

7.29 November Speaker at congress of the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland on ‘Challenges in Burn Contractures. Possible Solutions’ as we develop techniques for the management of these difficult problems in Africa.


Activities Planned for 2014

1.4 January 2014 to 18 February M/V Africa Mercy Pointe Noire, Congo working with Mercy Ships International (www.mercyships.org) Lectures to nurses and doctors on various plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures. Training of international surgeons in the management of conditions unique to the developing world. Free plastic and reconstructive surgeries to local people; burn contractures, head and neck abnormalities such as cleft lip and palates, tumours. Congenital hand and feet abnormalities. Hand surgery; post-trauma, nerve abnormalities, etc.

4.3-4 weeks in August Soddo Christian Hospital, Soddo, Ethiopia, working with PAACS training surgical trainees (general surgery) basic plastic and reconstructive surgical technique. Formal lectures to trainees on hand surgery, burn surgery, wound cover, facial fractures. Reconstructive operations done. Free plastic and reconstructive surgeries to local people

5.Several 10 day missions (approximately 4 missions) with Operation Smile repairing cleft lip and palates in Africa, south east Asia and South America (Madagascar  in March as the first mission and Phillipines in June). Free plastic and reconstructive surgeries to local people

6.Conference attendance on plastic and reconstructive surgery to improve the service to the developing world

7.Part of an international team through Operation Smile in the development of a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery unit at Jimma University, Ethiopia.
